Service

Troop 890 has several events throughout the year when we have an opportunity to give back to the church and community to show our appreciation for all the support we receive.

Lake Highlands Fourth of July Parade

We assist The Sons of the American Revolution with their participation in the Lake Highlands Fourth of July Parade. Our Scouts, in full Class A uniform, have the opportunity to march in the parade and earn service hours towards their next rank advancement. For more information go to the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands website.

Christmas Service Project

Around Christmas time, Troop 890 goes out into the community to spread Christmas cheer to provide service to LHUMC and the community it serves and say “Thank You” for being our chartering organization. We deliver food and gifts to some families in communities so they can have a Merry Christmas.

Scout Sunday & Pancake Breakfast

Once a year in February, we give a little back to the church on Scout Sunday. The troop cooks pancakes, sausage and bacon for the church members before the services. Orange juice and coffee are also made and served. This involves getting to church early, around 6:00am, to prepare the batter and meats.

The pancakes are cooked on a large homemade griddle that is placed over the large stove’s burners. The meats are heated/cooked in the large convection oven. The troop furnishes the plates, cups and plastic ware.

The Scout volunteers are encouraged to do the cooking with adult supervision. This activity usually wraps up around 11:00am.

The Scouts along with other Scouts that did not help with the breakfast are then required to attend the church service. A Scout color guard needs to be present to post and retrieve the colors. The Cross and Flame recipients are recognized at the church service. Scouts that work the breakfast do receive service hours. Scouts and ASMs are required to be in full Class A uniform.

Scouting For Food

Each year the Boy Scouts go out into our community to first deliver collection bags and then a week later go back out to collect food that is donated by the generous families in our area.

By giving to the Circle Ten Council’s Scouting for Food drive, you are helping those in need right here in the North Texas/Oklahoma region. Last year, Scouts collected 433,896 cans that were distributed to over 40 food banks across 12 counties.

White Rock Lakeshore Cleanup

This monthly service project helps to keep the shores of White Rock Lake beautiful through our efforts at picking up the trash that collects in our designated area. For more information visit our White Rock Lakeshore Cleanup page.

There are many opportunities throughout the year to give back to our community and earn service hours. There will be additional events held from time to time, so stay tuned and listen up at the Troop meetings.
